Face masks for high school students, daily screening, physical distancing, and frequent hand washing are among the recommendations from Ontario’s pediatric hospitals aimed at getting children safely back to school full-time this fall.

The alternative, according to child health experts is unthinkable, especially with evidence that the pandemic is harming many children. The COVID-19 pandemic might still be around for at least another year and potentially longer. Keeping children at home until it is over is unsustainable.

The updated guidance document from Toronto’s Sick Kids Hospital, co-authored by specialists from Ottawa’s CHEO and other pediatric hospitals was released just a day before Ontario Education Minister Stephen Lecce is expected to unveil the government plans for school reopening in the fall.
