‘Humbling beyond words’: Officers recognized for pulling boys from freezing Alberta lake

Sam Pidwerbeski rescued a struggling boy from a freezing lake. By using a rope, he dragged the boy through freezing six-foot waves to the side of the rescue boat.

The child was shivering, on the verge of hypothermia and unable to provide any clues to the whereabouts of the second boy who was still missing on Lac La Biche. In just minutes, Pidwerbeski and his partner Tyler Mann spotted the blue and yellow life jacket of the second boy and pulled his lifeless body from the water. Sadly, the 8-year old child could not be revived.

After retrieving the second boy, Mann immediately started CPR even though the boat was being tossed in the waves.

Risk for hypothermia

Upon returning to shore, the 13-year old boy was turned over to medical care and returned to the water to locate the second child.

After retrieving the second boy, Mann immediately started CPR even though the boat was being tossed in the waves. They rushed the child back to the shore but could not be revived.

Pidwerbeski feels lucky to be able to assist in the rescue and for all the support he has received from his family, friends and fellow officers.
