Face masks encountered resistance in Edmonton on the first day of the bylaw

The use of face masks encountered some resistance in Edmonton as the bylaw requiring them in indoor public spaces and transit took effect.

Most of the shoppers seen at Edmonton City Centre wore face masks, while some staff inside the mall were met with hostility. The masks are required in transit, and in all stores, restaurants, entertainment venues, recreation centers, malls, all city-run buildings, and taxis starting August 1.

Most people were willing to follow the rules. The store had a “no mask no entry” sign at the entrance, along with posters asking visitors to follow public health recommendations.

The use of face masks encountered some resistance in Edmonton as the bylaw requiring them in indoor public spaces and transit took effect.

A small group of around 50 people protested the city council’s new rules in downtown Edmonton, stating that they infringed on their personal freedoms. The protestors criticized the prime minister, public health officials leading the COVID-19 response, science, the media, Canada’s rule of law, and touted unproven conspiracy theories.

Most others who were seen walking downtown Edmonton afternoon wore masks.
