The employees of a Red Deer Scotiabank were recognized for saving the life of a man after a heart attack.
The man was at his usual bank to pay a bill. He paid the bill, joked around with the bank teller, and started walking out of the building. As he passed through the door, he collapsed. The man suffered a heart attack. At 6’6”, he fell straight backward, hitting the back of his head on the floor.
According to a Scotiabank employee, everyone heard a thump. Davis and Desarae Lang, together with two other Scotiabank employees rushed to the man’s side. The two other women set up a perimeter around the man while Davis and Land called 911.
Davis started to perform CPR and Lang was one the phone with the operator relaying the operator’s instructions. It only took minutes for the paramedics to arrive at the bank.
The paramedics rushed the man to the Red Deer Regional Hospital but he was later transferred to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton. Davis, who has never performed CPR before shared that she was worried that she might not have done it correctly. Her concern was put to ease when the paramedics returned 45 minutes later with the news that the man’s heart was beating again.
Due to the fall, the man experienced brain bleeding and bruising. He was under induced coma for two days. When he woke up, the man felt that someone had jumped up and down on his chest. He was informed by doctors that was a good indication that whoever performed CPR on him had done the right job.
