Woman dead after falling from a building

A woman is dead after falling from a balcony of a five-story apartment building in downtown Calgary. According to the police they are trying to arrest the woman due to a drug-related search warrant.

The woman was asked to surrender by the police before she was found on the ground severely injured. Some bystanders provided first aid on the woman. The ASIRT was called to investigate the fatality.

The incident happened Eau Claire apartment on the 1st Street Southeast near Riverfront Avenue. According to the police they arrested a man outside the building in relation to a shooting incident. They learned that a woman who also wanted in the investigation was still inside the building.

According to the officers they were granted the warrant to search the apartment building located in the 200-block of the 1st Street Southeast. The operation was very risky; they believe there were firearms inside the building.

Around 12:30 in the morning, a man was arrested outside the apartment in relation to a shooting investigation and some warrants of arrest. They surrounded the building and tried to persuade the woman inside the room on the fifth floor who was also wanted in connection with the investigation. They wanted the woman to come out of the building and surrender to the police.

But the woman instead of surrendering to the police went over the railing of a balcony and jumped. Some people and bystanders in the area immediately provided first aid on the woman. Officers helped in providing emergency first aid. Paramedics arrived and immediately brought the woman to the hospital for further treatment. She was declared dead later.

The ASIRT or the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team was called to investigate the fatality. It appeared that the woman went over the railing of the balcony, that was exactly what happened, will be the main focus of the investigation.

The policemen had no physical contact with the woman. All officers involved in the search were considered witness and will continue with their duties, according to the police.

ASIRT investigates incidents that involve police that resulted to serious injuries or death of the victim.
