Wearing a mask may reduce how sick you get from COVID-19

Mask-wearing has become ubiquitous with the coronavirus pandemic. It has been proven to be a preventative measure to slow the spread of the virus – the main benefit being to protect others in case you are infected and not aware of it.

Based on new research, it points to benefits being two-fold. Researchers from the University of California suggest that mask-wearing could also reduce the severity of COVID-19 infections, leading to more asymptomatic cases.

The idea is that masks can block a significant number of virus-infected droplets, reducing the dose of the virus a person inhales and ultimately reducing the chances of severe illness.

COVID-19 mainly spreads via droplets that are released when an infected person coughs, sneeze, speaks, or breathes – hence the emphasis on physical distancing and handwashing.
