Regina first aid

Student saved by teacher and 911 dispatcher

An elementary school teacher saved the life of a student with the help of a 911 dispatcher. She took her students out for a recess break. The children were playing and one suddenly fell to the ground.

The student whose identity and school was not revealed for privacy reasons had gone into sudden cardiac arrest.

Availability of defibrillators

The child survived with the help of Swain and Terry’s efforts. Although it was a positive outcome, Swain believes that she could have helped the student earlier if the school had an automated external defibrillator (AED).

A defibrillator is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias and sends electric shocks via the chest wall of the individual whose heart ceased to breathe.
