Snowmobiler who died after snow ledge collapses given CPR

A snowmobiler died despite CPR when a ledge of snow fell from under him near Whistle, B.C. As a result, the man plummeted down the hillside.

According to the RCMP, a 52-year old man from Nanaimo, B.C was driving a snowmobile in the area of Mount Callaghan near Callaghan Lake Provincial Park when he stopped on a cornice.

The officers were notified that the ledge of snow had collapsed, sweeping the snowmobiler around 75 meters down a slope. The man was partially buried in snow and the police stated that other snowmobilers in the area dug him out and started CPR until the rescuers arrived.

The man was declared dead at the scene and the coroners service is not investigation. The Mounties are warning people who are heading into the backcountry to be careful around cornices by keeping a safe distance from the edges of cliffs and to be aware of the risks of avalanches.
