The Ottawa Public Health is in conversation with senior city officials about requiring non-medical face masks inside business premises. The details will likely be released by the end of the week according to a statement by the city’s medical officer of health. The city is considering making masks mandatory in indoor spaces where people have difficulty staying two meters apart.
Ottawa Public Health already recommends wearing a cloth mask when in public places, like the grocery store, especially if physical distancing is not possible.
Residents are advised to get into the habit of carrying a mask. According to the city’s general manager of emergency and protective services, if wearing a mask is made mandatory, Ottawa will put all of the necessary enforcement tools in place.
The mandatory masks will help the city prevent outbreaks and move to Stage 3 more quickly. Wearing a cloth mask protects the wearer and others because some people who are infected with the virus do not know it.
