Mask bylaw conflicts turn violent

Violent conflicts over mandatory mask bylaws are a significant concern in the city that has to stop.

The police laid 39 criminal charges when conflicts over wearing face masks escalated into violence.

Most of the violent altercations occurred in retail and other customer-facing locations such as convenience stores, restaurants, and malls. Twenty victims were either store employees or members of the public. Security guards, transit officers, bus drivers, and paramedics were among other victims.

There is a misconception around the right to protest. It does not include imposing views on others or violence, and there are also issues around private property and trespassing.

Although it is a stressful time, it does not excuse violence. They have the right to peaceful protest, but when others are at risk, it should stop, or action will be taken.
