Four people hospitalized and two in critical condition after a fire

A house fire in Surrey sent four people to a hospital. Two victims were in critical condition. The two others were taken to a healthcare facility with non-life-threatening injuries.

The neighbors looked on as firefighters and paramedics performed CPR on the victims, were two of the injured were children – one was a baby close to a year old and the other was a toddler.

There was a total of 8 ambulances who responded to the scene at 144A Street and 71 Avenue in the East Newton neighborhood of the city. The Surrey Fire Service initially responded with four trucks but upgraded the fire to a second alarm after the arrival of the crews.

The crews arrived to see light smoke coming from the basement of the multi-unit building. Bystanders informed the firefighters there were people inside the basement suite. The people were removed from the scene and paramedics from the BC Ambulance Service delivered first aid to the victims.
