Edmonton’s mandatory mask rule extended to December 31

Edmonton’s mandatory mask bylaw has been extended until the end of 2021 in an effort to curb the spread of COVID-19.

The City council voted 12-1 to keep the bylaw in place for another year after it was set to expire at the end of 2020. Interim city manager Adam Laughlin recommended an extension until next June, but the council decided to amend the end date to December 31, 2021.

Under the bylaw, residents are required to wear face coverings in publicly accessible indoor spaces including retail stores, entertainment venues, recreation facilities, and on the transit system.

The bylaw can be repealed or extended by the council at any time prior to the expiry date.

The council’s decision came just hours before the province reported a new daily record with 1,155 cases, 499 in the Edmonton Zone. There are currently 4,520 active cases in the region.
