Edmonton mandates face masks on transit and city-owned buildings

Face masks will be required on the transit system of Edmonton and in city-owned buildings as of August 1. This is an effort to increase the comfort level of residents with public transit during COVID-19.

The mandatory use of face masks or coverings is critical for reassuring and motivating the residents to return to transit.

Along with city buses and LRT trains, residents need to wear face masks in transit stations, as well as in recreation centers and indoor spaces of the zoo and city golf courses. The Edmonton Public Library locations will also require masks.

Face masks will be required on the transit system of Edmonton and in city-owned buildings as of August 1.

Some of the exemptions to the rule, including children below the age of two and people with underlying medical conditions that would limit their ability to use a face mask. People who are eating, drinking, or engaging in physical activity will be exempt as well.

The face masks will not yet be mandatory in private businesses, such as malls and grocery stores, but Mayor Don Iveson stated that he wants the city to take that step and has called an urgent council meeting to discuss bylaw options.
