Trick-or-treaters in Alexandria, Cornwall, Casselman, Rockland, Hawkesbury, and other areas of eastern Ontario are being asked to stay home on Halloween night due to COVID-19.
The Eastern Ontario Health Unit states that due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and a recent increase in cases, it is strongly recommending residents to avoid traditional ways of celebrating Halloween, including no trick-or-treating.
The health unit states that going out trick-or-treating or handing out treats increases your family’s risk of getting or spreading COVID-19 because it exposes you to others.
They also strongly recommend canceling traditional organized community and municipal Halloween events.
The Eastern Ontario Health Unit states that if you decide to trick-or-treat, there are several measures to take to do it more safely, including:
- Choosing a costume that allows you and your child to wear a non-medical mask
- Only trick-or-treat outside and stay in your own community
- Trick or treat only with members of your direct household
- Bring a hand sanitizer and use it before handing candy or after touching high-touch surfaces such as doors, doorbells, or railings.
If you are handing out treats, the health unit suggests keeping at least two meters distance from trick-or-treaters and wash hands often or use a hand sanitizer.
