The players in an old-timer’s hockey league helped save a teammate’s life. One of the players suffered a heart attack in one of the dressing rooms at Pitt Meadows Arena Complex. His teammates delivered CPR and rushed to find a second defibrillator after discovering that the batteries in the first device were dead.
On the rescue
The man finished playing a game when he went into cardiac arrest after entering the dressing room.
The members of his team, the Tri-City Chiefs initiated CPR. When he failed to respond, the raced to get an automated external defibrillator (AED) located in the Volkswagen rink in the middle of the facility. Sadly, the defibrillator was not functioning. The teammates had to race to get the second defibrillator in the Chrysler Arena.
An engineer in the facility who was cleaning an empty dressing room noticed that the defibrillator in the Volkswagen rink was missing and rushed to aid. The engineer delivered CPR while a teammate used the second defibrillator until the arrival of the paramedics and Pitt Meadows firefighters.
Previously, the defibrillators at the arena undergo monthly checks. After the incident, they are checked weekly.
