Can you get COVID-19 twice?

There have been reports that some individuals who recovered from COVID-19 went on to test positive a second time. This raised concerns and many are asking – Can you get COVID-19 more than once?

The reality is – it has not yet been determined since we do not know how our immune system responds to this virus. Even if most of us want to believe that it is a “one-and-done” form of virus, it might be a mistake to assume that acquiring will make you immune.

Natural immunity to the virus can be achieved once the body produces large amounts of antibodies that can last in the body for a long time. Based on studies, it has been determined that people who get COVID-19 generate antibodies to the virus, and these antibodies are likely to produce immunity for some period of time. Nevertheless, it is not known how long that immunity will last.

In one study where rhesus monkeys were infected with SARS-CoV-2, it was discovered that the natural immunity of the monkeys lasted at least a month. However, it doesn’t mean that the immunity of the monkeys will not fade over time – or that the human system works the same.

There have been reports that some individuals who recovered from COVID-19 went on to test positive a second time.

Since it is possible that an individual might get COVID-19 more than once, it is vital to take the precautions to avoid exposure to the virus, whether you already had it or not.

Always wear a face mask in public, wash hands regularly throughout the day, avoid close contact with others. By strictly observing these measures, it can help avoid COVID-19.
