BC boy recognized for helping save father’s life

An 11-year old boy saved the life of his father with CPR. Arthur Speirs was jogging with his father David in Vancouver when the 65-year old dentist suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed onto the pavement.

Prompt action

According to Arthur, he knew something was wrong. His father was on his face, bleeding from his nose when he fell and making noises.

The young boy ran to the nearest house looking for help and luckily found Lisa and Simon Edgett. Simon had taken CPR courses years earlier and started to resuscitate David as Lisa called 911.

Simon stated that he barely remembered anything. The dispatcher on the phone was so clear and precise. He simply followed what the dispatcher instructed.

The paramedics eventually arrived and transported David to a healthcare facility where he stayed for 7 days before regaining consciousness.

The health officials stated that a cardiac arrest victim is likely to survive if CPR is given by a bystander, but the basic procedure is only performed in around 15% of cases.

After the near-tragedy, the Speirs and Edgett families have become close friends and Arthur was inspired to take a CPR course.
