B.C. police watchdog informed of the death of allegedly intoxicated man

The police watchdog of British Columbia has been called to investigate an incident that led to the death of an intoxicated man.

What happened?

Based on the news release, the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. stated that RCMP notified it of the incident. The police used both pepper spray and a “conducted energy weapon” against the man, who went into medical distress and later died. According to a witness, the incident occurred inside Stonesedge Kitchen.

After using the pepper spray, the Taser and batons on the man, he suddenly became still and the officers started CPR and called the emergency health services. The three officers were treated at a hospital for minor injuries before being released.

The IIO confirmed in an email that it has been informed of the incident but did not describe the nature of what happened.

The IIO is responsible for investigating incidents involving police officers in British Columbia that result in death or serious harm.
