An Ottawa police officer who attempted to save a young man who drowned stresses the importance of CPR. Everybody who witnesses emergencies should try to help after he witnessed some people stand by and do nothing.
Prompt intervention
Det.-Const Hussein Assaad was off-duty at Lac Leamy with family and friends when they heard people shouting for help.
They rushed to the scene near the shore where a 24-year old man was lying on the ground unconscious after being retrieved out of the lake. Assaad stated that the young man was in the water for around 10-15 minutes before others found him and that a bystander was performing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on the shore.
The officer recalled his training and instructed the bystander to stop performing the mouth-to-mouth breathing. The officer started compressions and water would gush out of his mouth.
Importance of first aid training
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and using an automated external defibrillator (AED) can save a life. Prompt delivery of life-saving techniques improves the chances of survival during emergencies.
