Off-duty nurse saves a life with CPR

P.E.I. woman who was given CPR thankful to nurse who saved her life. If not for the quick response of an off-duty nurse and a series of coincidences, a Burton P.E.I woman might not be alive today.

Laurie Ouellette, 57 years old was in Windsor with her husband visiting family. One day, she went to Wendy’s with her husband and mother to get something to eat.

Unexpected ordeal

Ouellette was placed on the floor and Ferrari started CPR to get her breathing started again.

As they were sitting at a table, Ouellette’s head bobbed and her chin touched her chest. It was then that her head hit the table. She ceased to breathe and started to turn blue. Her husband shouted for someone to call 911. Luckily, an off-duty nurse, Amanda Ferrari happened to be in the restaurant.

Ouellette was placed on the floor and Ferrari started CPR to get her breathing started again. Ouellette later learned that she suffered a cardiac arrest due to a blocked artery.

The emergency medical services arrived at the restaurant around 10-15 minutes after receiving the call. Ouellette was certain that the intervention of the nurse saved her life, especially due to the low survival rate of those who suffer a cardiac arrest outside of a hospital.
