A 45-year old Sydney woman died after helping rescue a group of swimmers stranded by a riptide.
The watery rescue turned awry
According to RCMP Const. Tammy Lobb, the RCMP, local firefighters, Emergency Health Services paramedics, and the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre responded to a report regarding a group of distressed swimmers at a beach in Broad Cove. While waiting for the emergency responders, several people at the beach were able to rescue the group.
The bystanders on the beach entered the water and rescued the group. Upon exiting the water, a 45-year old woman from Sydney collapsed onshore. CPR was performed by the bystanders until the arrival of the EHS paramedics but the woman was declared dead at the scene. It was confirmed that the deceased woman was one of the rescuers.
The death of the woman is not suspicious in any way but an investigation by the RCMP and medical examiner’s officer is underway.
After the rescue, a man was also given treatment at the scene and transported to a healthcare facility with non-life-threatening injuries.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and using an automated external defibrillator (AED) can save a life. Prompt delivery of life-saving techniques improves the chances of survival during emergencies.
