Two citizens recognized for life-saving efforts

Jesse Boyes and Michael Ercanbrack were recognized by Abbotsford police for life-saving efforts.

Saving a life

The Abbotsford Police Board awarded commendations to two local citizens. Boyes was recognized for intervening in a potential drowning. He was walking on Discovery Trail at Wells Gray Avenue and McKinley Drive when he spotted a teenager who had fallen on a 30-foot embankment into a pond. The youth was suffering from a medical issue and Boyes called 911.

He climbed on top of the submerged vehicle, smashed the passenger window and pulled the driver to safety to be given first aid care.

Although the victim resisted Boyes’ assistance, he was able to wrestle him to the shoreline. He continued to struggle with the victim to keep his head above the water until the police arrived. The victim would have likely drowned without Boyes’ assistance.

Ercanbrack was recognized for his role in an incident. At that time, he was driving his tractor when a driver of a school bus alerted him about an upside-down truck in a water-filled ditch. The driver attempted to get out of the truck but unable to open the doors and water was quickly filling the vehicle. Ercanbrack jumped off his tractor, got a hammer from a passerby and waded to the vehicle.

He climbed on top of the submerged vehicle, smashed the passenger window and pulled the driver to safety to be given first aid care.
