Jesse Boyes and Michael Ercanbrack were recognized for their heroic efforts. Both were honored at the board meeting of Abbotsford police. Boyes was given recognition for having intervened in a potential drowning.
Drowning incident
Boyes was walking on Discovery Trail at Wells Gray Avenue and McKinley Drive when he spotted a teenager who fell down a 30-foot embankment into a pond. The teenager was suffering from a medical condition and Boyes called 911.
Although the victim resisted Boyes’ assistance, he was able to wrestle him to the shoreline. He continued to struggle with the victim to keep his head above the water until the arrival of the police. The teenager would have drowned without Boyes’ help.
Ercanbrack was recognized for her role in an incident. He was driving his tractor in an area of Tolmie Road and No. 3 Road when the driver of a school bus alerted him to an upside-down truck in a water-filled ditch. The driver tried to get out of the truck but unable to open the doors and water was quickly filling the vehicle. Ercanbrack jumped off his tractor, handed a hammer by a passerby and waded to the vehicle.
He climbed on top of the vehicle, smashed the passenger window and pulled out the driver to safety. The driver of the truck was given first aid care and not seriously injured. Police stated that he would not have lasted longer if Ercanbrack did not come along.
