Students save school bus driver and provided with first aid

A group of students from St Mary Catholic Secondary School was announced as heroes for bringing the school bus to stop and provided initial first aid on the driver after he collapsed from medical distress.

Saving a life

The incident happened on a Monday morning, the school bus was full of students that are returning to school after a month break. The bus was traveling down York Road before the Olympic drive in Dundas, Ontario. A student named Aidan Gilmore was seating in one of the front seats. The driver was not feeling well and started having convulsions. According to Gilmore, he realized the driver was having a seizure.

Gilmore, a grade 10 student got up and rushed to the wheel. The foot of the driver was still on the brake. The bus cannot be controlled and changing directions. Gilmore had to do something. The 14-year-old boy, Gilmore has no driver’s license and has not driven a car. He only has driven a golf cart. Still, he managed to gradually make the bus to a stop on the side of the road.

Other students on the bus moved from their seats and tried to help. Some students with first aid training rushed to check on the driver and immediately provided first aid on him. Other called the emergency numbers and notified their school what had happened to them. One student managed to park the bus and turned the engine off. One student said that it was like were off-roading a bus.

Finally, another school bus arrived, and all the students managed to arrive in school on time. The paramedics arrived in the area and continued providing first aid on the driver. He was immediately brought to the hospital for further treatment.

According to the Regional manager, Sara Vala, the driver of the bus works for Sharp Bus Lines and recovering in the hospital. The doctors are still running test to determine what really happened to him. The driver was very grateful and wants to thank them for all their quick thinking and actions. The parents of Gilmore were very proud of their son. He did not even think twice and just acted on his instinct.
