A 65-year old employee at a Saskatoon car dealership is alive today due to the rapid-thinking co-workers and easy access to an automated external defibrillator (AED).
The employees obtained the company’s AED and applied it to their co-worker. According to Myron Knihnitski, one of the employees who acted quickly, she had no experience in using a defibrillator and there was another employee who did, but she never used it.
According to Brenda, Ted’s wife, her husband is back to his old self thanks to the efforts of his co-workers.
Why an AED is important
The presence of an automated external defibrillator (AED) has a big impact on the survival rate of individuals suffering from sudden cardiac arrest.
The timely delivery of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the availability of a defibrillator drastically improves that chances of survival of a person. Prompt CPR can make a big difference in saving the life of an individual during emergencies.
In other instances, another Saskatoon man was given treatment with an AED after experiencing a cardiac arrest during a hockey match at Schroh Arena. The availability of an AED is a must-have in all public areas.
