Heart attack on a treadmill: CPR brings man back to life

Jose Guzman had a new lease on life after collapsing. The 42-year old businessman is supporting CPR training and access to defibrillators in public areas after suffering a heart attack while running at Crunch, formerly World Gym on Lauzon Road.

Timely assistance

A stranger came to his rescue. Dominick Matta, a 19-year old trained lifeguard who had not performed CPR in real life delivered the emergency procedure for the initial critical minutes. Upon the arrival of the firefighters, they attended to the man. After 35 minutes without a pulse and a third shock from a defibrillator, Guzman finally stirred back to life.

Regina first aid
The first few moments are the most vital to start CPR.

According to Guzman who was a former competitive bodybuilder, he used to train hard at the gym. He remember getting on the treadmill and started to run but could not remember what happened after. He was lucky that he survived.

Guzman thanks Matta whom he calls as his savior. He also thanked a gym employee who pitched in and the Windsor firefighters and EMS personnel. He also praises the life-saving technique of CPR.

Why first aid training is vital

First aid and CPR training is generally for the home environment since most situations occur often at home. The first few moments are the most vital to start CPR. Prompt initiation of CPR provides the individual with a higher chance of survival. If used with a defibrillator, the chances for survival drastically increases.
