Fraser Valley crafters busy sewing cotton masks for healthcare workers

A Chilliwack woman has created 125 masks and still going strong. A group of Fraser Valley crafters has been creating up a storm recently as they produce masks for healthcare workers and others in need.

The Facebook group called Fraser Valley Craft Guild shared information on how to make cotton masks and get them to people who need them.

The masks should be made from 100% cotton material and the tighter the weave of the fabric, the better to allow for the maximum amount of filtration. The cotton masks are not replacements for N95 masks which are form-fitted to the face and offer superior protection. Nevertheless, with the supply demands, they are better than nothing.

There have been requests from healthcare workers who are not dealing with COVID-19 patients directly but using the masks to help with keeping stock of proper PPE for those that are. There were also requests from frontline works such as airport and retail grocery staff as paper masks are hard to obtain these days.

One of the issues with the cotton masks is that they must be washed after use. With a centralized laundry system in place for the hospitals, once the cotton masks leave to be washed, there is no guarantee that they will return to where they came from.
