Ferry workers saved the life of a man with CPR. A B.C. Ferries trip took a dramatic turn as the vessel made a detour to rescue a man from a sinking ship.
Saved on time
The 30-year old sent a distress call after his powerboat started taking in water west of Bowen Island, B.C. He had reportedly been taking a nap when he was awoken by his vessel’s bilge alarm.
Ferry spokeswoman Deborah Marshall stated that the man abandoned his boat and held on to a crate until he was rescued by workers from the Queen of Cowitchan ferry sailing from Nanaimo.
The 11.5 meter powerboat was nearly two-thirds submerged by the time the rescue craft reached him. A tugboat towing a barge also stopped to help.
The ferry workers performed CPR on the man until he was transported by the coast guard hovercraft. The man was transported to a healthcare facility and treated for hypothermia but is in a good condition.
