A deadly accident on Highway 125 raised concerns on the safety in the area. A 79-year old driver involved in a single-vehicular crash in Balls Creek died in the hospital.
He was with the 78-year old female passenger who were both of North River were transported to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. The woman sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Road safety
Many passersby stopped to help the victims. According to Kenneth Jackson, it was a struggle to open the truck door. The nurses and women looked after the lady while others tried to get her husband out of the truck. The people took turns in delivering CPR on the man until the ambulance arrived.
The Frenchvale Road and North Sydney fire departments also responded to the incident. According to Frenchvale fire chief Mark Voutier, the accident is due to the heavy rain and bad section of road. There are ruts and once it rains heavily, vehicles tend to hydroplane. It can happen quickly and can take one by surprise while driving along and losing control of the vehicle.
North Sydney fire chief Lloyd MacIntosh stated that the area in the highway should be repaired.
The Department of Transportation identified around 6 kilometers between Highway 105 and Exit 6 on Highway 125 with evident rutting.
