A victim of stabbing was given CPR. When police and EMS entered the kitchen of a Regina house, they ended up saving a life.
Stabbing incident
According to Regina Police Service Const. Sam Kosolofski, he found Joseph Okute lying face down on the floor, surrounded by a large pool of blood. It was not until he got closer that he realized the full extent of the damage. Joseph’s throat had been cut.
The only person in the house who was the attacker had been his own father. Mark Okute is standing trial on two charges – attempted murder and aggravated assault.
Kosolofski stated that police received a call that night about a stabbing at 1078 Argyle St. As the first responders on the scene, Kosolofski and his partner saw a trail of blood droplets leading to the front door and walked in to find an intoxicated man. The person who called 911 was sitting on a couch.
While his partner stayed with the man, Kosolofski went into the kitchen where he found Joseph. With the help from another officer who arrived, Kosolofski turned Joseph over. He saw a large puncture wound to the right side of the man’s neck which was spurting blood. He also had stab wounds to his chin and cheek.
Kosolofski grabbed a dish towel from the counter and held it against his neck. Joseph was still semi-conscious and seemed to try to sit up. It change minutes after the arrival of the police. Kosolofski heard a gargling noise before Joseph stopped breathing. Upon assessment, he did not have a pulse.
As Kosolofski maintained pressure on the most serious wound, another officer started CPR. They continued the resuscitation effort until the arrival of the EMS who took over with a LUCAS machine which provides chest compressions.
Prompt intervention
During emergencies, prompt delivery of the appropriate first aid skills is important. As one of these life-saving skills, CPR must be carried out promptly to improve the chances of survival.
