The B.C. Centre for Disease Control released information about the different types of face masks. It also maintained that wearing one is not a substitute for other methods of controlling the spread of COVID-19.
According to the BCCDC, the most effective actions people can take are physical distancing, washing their hands and staying home if sick. The masks will not replace these actions. The masks, face coverings, and gloves are the least protective measures for limiting the transmission of COVID-19. But the CDC states that when worn properly for short periods, they offer some protection, especially when being two meters away from others is not possible.
Cloth face masks can be used to reduce the spread of large respiratory droplets, but only offer minimal protection to the person wearing it. For those who are planning to wear one, it is recommended to use clean woven cloth or linen such as a bedsheet, tea towel, T-shirt, or pillowcase. The mask must completely cover the nose and mouth and fit snugly while still allowing you to breathe normally. Additionally, the masks must be washed regularly.
