Baby’s life saved by bystanders

The baby together with his parents was driving along St. Laurent Blvd. in the St. Laurent and Belfast area. The baby was not breathing. Several bystanders noticed the emergency and rushed over to give help to the family. Some called the emergency numbers, the paramedic dispatcher provided CPR instructions over the phone to any bystanders willing to help. A couple of strangers arrived knows how to provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation. They tried to resuscitate the little baby.

Timely response

A woman named Carvalho of the Veterans Health Center and has training in first aid saw the head of the baby is down, his arms down and her first reaction is to stop and help the baby. The baby is completely purple. She started giving the baby cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Then another man arrived, an officer for the city of Ottawa and a teacher on CPR courses helped with the resuscitation. He gave the baby mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and started providing CPR by placing two fingers on the chest and saw movement in the chest, it was rising and falling. One of the bystanders called help from the firefighters. The two officers brought a bag-valve-mask for the baby and started providing oxygen for the little baby. Eventually the paramedics arrived and the baby was taken to the hospital in serious condition for further treatment. The baby is now doing okay.

The two people who helped saved the baby where just happy the baby is now OK. They both stressed the importance of knowing CPR in times of emergency rescue.

According to the Ottawa paramedics the baby had a cardiac arrest while traveling along with his parents.

Under recovery

While the baby was recovering from the Children’s Hospital, the parents of the baby met with the two CPR trained people and the paramedic dispatcher who came to help the little baby from seizures and cardiac arrest a few days ago. The parents were grateful and thank them that their baby was revived.

The baby was released from the hospital, but a few days later he was again rushed in an ambulance back to the hospital. According to the mother, the baby again stopped breathing and the color of the skin turned grey. The mother had taken a refresher instruction in CPR while their baby was in the hospital. She provided life-saving breathing and chest compression on her baby and he was revived before the paramedics arrived.

First aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation courses are offered throughout the city.
