Regina first aid

A woman kept his heart beating

A woman working in Pro shop and a trained lifeguard save the life of an old man by keeping his heart beating.

It was a normal day for a man named Birt and was playing golf in a Golf Course in Stratford. His wife did not notice that he was behaving differently, and he was joking before he left for the golf course.

Pushing through

Regina first aid
A defibrillator was placed in his chest and it was determined that he had a full cardiac arrest.

While he was playing, one of his golf partners noticed that something is wrong with Birt and he does not look very well. He was taken to the clubhouse in a golf cart. He was having difficulty staying conscious. Cassandra who is working in the Pro Shop and a lifeguard volunteered to help the man by giving first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitations. She treated Birt for shock and encouraged him to keep breathing. When the ambulance arrived, the man already lost consciousness. Cassandra worked together with the paramedics in helping the heart beat by providing chest compressions. She also instructed other staff on how to give proper chest compressions.

Cassandra gives credit to the people who trained her for first aid and that is the reason she has self confidence in providing first aid to the man.

Birt was brought to the hospital and given further treatment. He was put in an induced coma and on a respirator for at least 5 days. A defibrillator was placed in his chest and it was determined that he had a full cardiac arrest. This is not Birt’s first episodes of the arrest. In the past years he had a quadruple bypass. A quadruple bypass is an open heart surgery process to improve the flow of blood to the heart. It is done when the person is having shortness of breath, chest pain and jaw pain.

While Birt was recovering, he does not remember anything that was happening to him; he did not remember he left home that morning; the drive over the bridge; entering the golf course and does not remember who he was playing with.

Helping hand

Birt thanked Cassandra for saving his life. He still wants to enjoy his family and grandchildren and the whole thing. Cassandra was happy that an opportunity was given to her to help other people and they both gave each other a big hug.

The whole suffering has given Birt a new outlook on life. Every morning upon waking up, he stands by the window and thank God for giving him another day and hopes to be back in the course soon.
