Non-medical face masks will be mandatory in most indoor public places in Nova Scotia and people are scrambling in preparation.
The chief medical officer of health in Nova Scotia announced that wearing a non-medical mask in most indoor public places is a key part of protecting each other from COVID-19 and it will be mandatory.
All Nova Scotians are encouraged to use traditional, non-medical masks. There are many local suppliers making and selling masks and while prices may vary, some are quite economical. Ways are being considered to ensure people are able to access a mask regardless of their situation.
Face shields cannot be worn instead of a non-medical mask. The reason for this is that a face shield only protects the eyes but does not protect other people if the wearer sneezes or coughs. A face shield and mask can be worn together but most Nova Scotians are not going to be in situations that require wearing both.
Face masks are only part of the package of personal protective measures. Nova Scotians are reminded to stay home if you feel unwell, wash or sanitize your hands often, use proper cough and sneeze etiquette, observe physical distancing, avoid touching your face, mouth, nose, and eyes as well as limiting the number of people you are exposed to and clean high-touch surfaces and objects regularly.
