Based on the report of the New York State Police, a 49-year old Canadian man died after becoming sick while diving near a shipwreck in the St. Lawrence River.
Dangers in the water
According to the troopers, they received a distress call right before noon from a dive charter boat near the Rock Island Lighthouse. An unresponsive diver was brought back up under 18 meters. CPR was performed and was transported to a healthcare facility where he was later declared dead. The troopers identified the man as Francois Lacourse.
An autopsy was scheduled. According to the police, the cause of death is linked to natural illness.
The dive instructor, Anouar Bennaid of Quebec was also taken to a healthcare facility for monitoring due to decompression sickness and expected to fully recover.
