BC police watchdog investigates man’s death in RCMP custody

The death of a man in Kelowna RCMP’s lockup is under investigation by the BC police watchdog. Based on a release from the BC RCMP, a 40-year old man was transported to a healthcare facility after a vehicle struck a tree in Kelowna.

Undergoing scrutiny

The man was cleared by the hospital staff and brought to a holding cell of the police where he was later discovered unresponsive.

According to RCMP, the officers delivered CPR and the paramedics responded but the man was declared dead around 2:40 PM. The identity of the man and the root cause of death was not revealed.

The Independent Investigations Office which handles all deaths or serious injuries involving the police is not assessing the case.
