Rapid action of bystanders and arena staff revived a man suffering from cardiac arrest. A 48-year old man went into cardiac arrest while he was playing hockey at the Minto Sports Complex.
Bystanders saving a life
The bystanders started to perform CPR after a man collapsed while others were instructed by a paramedics communications officer to the nearest defibrillator inside the complex. An employee of the University of Ottawa sports complex utilized the defibrillator to deliver a shock to the man which restored a pulse.
The man was treated at the scene by the paramedics who provided medications and continued with resuscitative care while on the way to the healthcare facility. The condition of the man would be different if the bystanders did not act.
Individuals suffering from cardiac arrest only have minutes before damage develops in which recover is no longer possible.
The “Chain of Survival” requires rapid intervention from bystanders and easy access to defibrillators which aims on saving the lives of individuals under cardiac arrest.
