One inmate is dead and another one in the hospital due to a suspected overdose at the Maplehurst Correctional Complex in Milton, Ontario. Another four inmates were returned to the jail also due to overdoses that happened in one cell block.
Dangers of overdose
The ministry of the solicitor general of Ontario is investigating a series of suspected overdoses of drug that is happening at the Maplehurst Correctional Complex in Milton, Ontario. These overdoses resulted in the death of one of the inmates. The spokesperson of the ministry, Andrew Morrison stated in the news that they are focusing on whether the procedures and policies were followed in the correctional center an investigation of the incident is still going on.
The police and the paramedics received a call from the Maplehurst Correctional Complex around 5:50 in the afternoon. Jail staff provided first aid on the inmates and called the emergency numbers. The paramedics arrived and took over the treatment on the six inmates and were taken immediately to the hospital for further treatment.
Later the police were told that there were several inmates who were in medical distress and needs immediate medical attention. The inmate who died was declared in the dead in the hospital and the police have not disclosed the condition of the inmate who is still in the hospital. When an inmate died and in custody, the police, the ministry and the coroner of the province are the ones investigating the incident. The ministry checks the procedures and policies in relation to the care of the inmate who died. The cause and manner of death are determined by the coroner and the police determine if there was any criminality involved in the incident.
The police said all the 6 inmates involved are confined in the same cell block and involves the use of an illegal drug. They have not determined how the drug made its way inside the jail and what type of drug was used.
According to Christ Jackel of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union, the overdoses happened all at the same time in one area of the Maplehurst Correctional Complex. Late in the afternoon at about 5 o’clock these involved inmates began showing signs of overdose and started dropping one after another. The staff immediately responded to the incident and started providing first aid and CPR on the victims. Illegal drugs, which sometimes come in liquid form, are brought into jails through the mails and on the inmates themselves.
